Soil is not fill

Most urban tree failures are commonly traced back to what was in the pit. Almost none are traced back to what was written in the specification. That is the same problem seen from two ends.

A tree pit is an eighty-year piece of infrastructure delivered in a single afternoon.

When the tree fails, the material is not reassessed. The replacement goes into the same hole.

The material that goes into it is chosen by cost code, not by function.

What substrate actually is

It's there to fulfil a function, not to provide a fill.

A specification that names substrate by trade code or price band controls none of these functions. A specification that names them by measurable threshold controls all of them.

The substrate is the root zone's operating environment. It has to work with a structural load without closing to root growth. It has to hold water without going anaerobic. It has to hold nutrients without leaching. It has to host a living microbial community, or the tree cannot access what is in the substrate in the first place.
